Batch Brewing Your Kombucha

This week has been crazy busy for both Carrie and I, so I decided to get the instructions for batch brewing your kombucha down here and then we will have to make our video later. I know. Sad. But we’ll get to it! So this is actually really easy. Super easy. And fun. You can use whatever teas you want and get creative with flavors before you even begin to think about bottling! For flavoring your kombucha, see our post HERE. Now, to begin – you will need to decide how much kombucha you are wanting to drink every week or two. We brew 2 gallons in gallon containers. So I have 2 jars brewing at the same time. Before I found my gallon containers – I used 4 half gallon containers. Which was actually kinda fun because then I could experiment and use different teas for each container. But it did take up a lot more space. So let’s get started! Let’s break it down! Ok… maybe not that kind of breaking it down… ahem… …

Curing Eczema by “Going Paleo”

If you’ve read our “About” page, you already know that one of the main reasons I found Paleo to begin with was researching a way to cure my 4 year old’s eczema – when she was 1 year old. All of the research I did told me that eczema was the body reacting to an allergy. Most likely, a food allergy. The most common culprits were eggs, dairy or gluten. It could even be a combination of those things. The first thing we tried was to cut out eggs and dairy. Dairy was an easy one to cut out since my husband is lactose intolerant, we didn’t eat much of it anyway. This didn’t work for us. We saw no results. Our poor baby still had splotches on her arms and was noticeably itchy. My husband and I both did our own research and came to the same conclusion… Paleo. We talked about it and decided the only way it was going to work was to go 100%. We had to follow the minimum 30 day …

Flavoring Your Homemade Kombucha

Sooo… I just killed an hour getting sucked into Pinterest. Which is my main reason I try to stay away from pinterest… I didn’t even get anything productive done, like adding things to The Paleo Homesteader pinterest page. Instead I got sucked into the world of etsy and jewelry and fashion. Whoops. And the ironic part – I hate shopping. I’d rather find exactly what I want and then perform a surgical strike and be in and out. Done! Apparently this was my window shopping. Ah well… at least I had a productive morning and pulled myself away before… I don’t know. Before I became an internet zombie? You know what I’m talking about. So before I go “something shiny” on you and get sucked into something else that would probably be a huge waste of time. I’ve been doing this a lot today… I should start on the actual purpose of this post! (Because let’s face it… in the amount of time it’s taken me to type out these 2 paragraphs.. I’ve already “something shiny’ed” on …

Continuous Brew Kombucha

Fizzy, tangy kombucha. Mmmm. Only a year ago I was way too intimidated to attempt making my own kombucha; but you guys—it is sooo easy. Seriously.  Easy.  I am going to tell you how to set up a continuous brew system, which I think rocks. Before we get started,  I want to say even though this post seems super long set up and maintenance will be a breeze. Promise. Oh, one more thing, I’m not going to go into all the details about why kombucha is good for you and why you should drink it. I am assuming if you’re here you’ve already figured it out, although I’m happy to answer questions. But if you’re interested here and here are two good places to begin your research. Why Continuous Brew If you are new to kombucha and don’t care, you can skip this part.  If you’d like me to write up how to brew using the batch method, let me know and I will.  That said, there are a few reasons that this method works …

Easy Banana Dessert

Today we got up, ate breakfast, the girls drew on their chalkboard wall for about an hour, then we went outside and played for about an hour, now Tahlia is napping and Taevia is eating lunch. It feels like a pretty accomplished day in my tiny people’s lives so far. So, I’m taking advantage of the fact that everyone is in a good mood and motivated today to get you a quick recipe! I threw this together the other night because I wanted dessert but didn’t want something sugary necessarily. Ya know? Something that tasted good and was delicious. So I made this. Yum. Easy Banana Dessert Ingredients: 1 cup almonds processed through your food processor or blender (yes, other nut types will work too! Go crazy! Or nutty!… hahaha yeah. I went there. Again.) 2 tbsp grassfed butter 1 banana per person coconut whipped cream Ingredients for coconut whipped cream: 1 can full fat coconut milk 1 tbsp pure grade B maple syrup Directions: For the coconut whipped cream, you have to place the can …

Carmelized Onion, Chicken and Bacon Paleo Quiche

Here we are heading into the weekend—I’ve got your breakfast or dinner covered with this quiche. Toss it together tonight while you are making dinner and you can heat it up in the morning and have a lazy brunch (don’t forget the coffee!) this weekend.  See? I’m all helpful and stuff! And with no further ado (so you can get started), here’s the recipe! Ingredients  For the Crust 2 cups almond flour 3 tbsp coconut flour ¾ cup of avocado oil (you could substitute melted coconut oil but it will be sweeter and I’d add a little extra salt) ¼ tsp sea salt 1 clove garlic, minced 2 tbsp of water (optional) For the filling 10-12 pastured eggs (I used 12 and had a dense quiche that easily served 6 and had leftovers) 1-2 tbsp of avocado oil 1-2 (preferably cooked) chicken breasts 4 slices bacon 1 small onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 2 tbsp pastured butter or coconut oil chopped spinach (optional) salt and pepper to taste Preheat the oven to 350. Paleo Broccoli Cheese Soup

Wait… Cheese? Cheese…. paleo? Paleo…. cheese? Ok ok fiiiiine. There isn’t actually any cheese in this recipe. But it tastes cheesy and it’s delicious. So… shut it. It’s fine! You will just have to make it and find out for yourself! I have gotten so many requests for this recipe that I figured I should probably actually attempt to make one! Then I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was – and actually tasted really good! I even had a few friends over and asked them to taste it too. Because let’s face it… sometimes I might think something is delicious and no one else will like it. Because everyone else is crazy…. that’s my story at least… Apparently I’ve had too much coffee today. Or maybe too little… That’s it. I have had too LITTLE coffee today! So before I go on a completely unrelated random tangent, I should probably just give you the recipe…. Here ya go! Paleo Broccoli Cheese Soup Ingredients: 4 cups bone broth (or chicken broth, or beef broth – …
